In the second part of this interview, I talk with Sarah Jade about developing workshops, starting to compete, winning Miss Pole Dance America, and creating shows for this community.
If you want to know more about Sarah Jade, check out Episode #2 to hear about how she got started.
Work it!
- Developing the content – Sarah looks for things to teach where there’s a limited number of workshops available.
- Here We Roll Again – This workshop encompasses all the nuances and intricacies of shoulder rolls so you can take yours to the next level.
- Racy Basics – This is a workshop on how to teach beginner moves if you’ve never taught them before. << This is a great workshop for new studio owners!
- Sarah Jade clearly loves a good pun – she incorporates them into the names of her workshops. We decided to call this unintentional branding, but really it just makes Sarah smile.
Stiff Competition
- Alethea Austin convinced Sarah Jade to enter her first competition in 2010. (USPDF)
- She did not place in this competition and was very nervous. In fact, she mentions staring at the floor the entire time she was on stage.
- She credits dancer Chalese Marie with helping her get over here fear.
- Sarah was told to say “Fuck It” and hit the stage. Now Sarah says she is able to enjoy being on stage.
- Sarah has gone on to WIN Miss Pole Dance America in 2016.
Bad to the Chrome
- Bad to the Chrome – A show where everything and everyone was welcome.
- B2tC started as a pole camp that ended with a showcase. Sarah started the camp to keep from traveling as much. To her surprise, the camps sold out within the first day.
- Sarah Jade got the idea from Alethea Austin to remove the pole cleaning from the show and run people back to back (With a pole cleaning while a solo is running).
- Along with capping performers at 3 minutes of music, Sarah Jade is able to give 50 acts a stage in two hours.
- And each show keeps getting bigger and bigger. The last show’s headliners included Alethea Austin, Karol Helms, Brian Wolf, Bentley Rebel, Doris Arnold, & Davina SheWolf << MIND BLOWN!
Sweet Charity
- Pole Love is a charity showcase that benefits a local cause.
- The show started in 2017 after the horrific attack on Pulse Night Club. In 2018, the show supported Apple a Day. This year’s show (Sept. 28th 2019) will benefit Pet Pal Animal Shelter.
- She also has performers donate $50 to participate in order to maximize the amount she is able to donate.
- For the last 2 years, Sarah has been able to donate $6,000. Mostly because she is able to keep costs down since the venue is in her studio.
Good as Hell
- The Power of Poletivity is a student showcase for studio members only.
- While the person was performing, the people in the audience wrote compliments on pieces of paper and placed them inside a jar.
- The performer would then get this amazing jar of anonymous affirmations.
- This show was only open to students and instructors
STUDIO OWNERS – Sarah Jade is totally cool with you using this idea. It’s great, so do it! Just tag her so she can see.
Sarah’s favorite performance of herself – Miss Pole Dance America 2016
My favorite of performance of Sarah Jade – Florida Pole Fitness Championship 2016 (*Note – I definitely say this performance was at Pole for a Purpose but I was clearly mistaken. Sorry guys!)
Sarah’s favorite performance of someone else – Felix Cane, Miss Pole Dance Australia 2006
I can’t thank Sarah Jade enough for the time she gave for this interview. I had soooo many questions and she patiently and openly gave me all the answers. This lady is the real deal and we are lucky to have her.
